M2INDEX/1.0WORLD MONEY SUPPLY MONITOR — 159 ECONOMIES ONLINE UTC

Editorial Policy

This page describes what the site already does, not what it intends to do. Every rule below is enforced by the pipeline or by a check that fails the build.

What we publish

Broad money supply — the widest monetary aggregate each country reports — for every economy the IMF, the World Bank, the ECB or the Bank of Canada publish. We publish those measurements and figures derived from them. We do not publish forecasts, price targets or investment advice.

Where the numbers come from

Primary sources only, named on the page that uses them: IMF MFS_MA/BM_MAI and MFS_DC/DCORP_L_BM, World Bank FM.LBL.BMNY.CN, ECB BSI M3, Bank of Canada Valet. Conversion to US dollars uses World Bank PA.NUS.FCRF period-average rates matched to the year of the observation. The methodology states the source hierarchy, the exclusions and the known gaps.

Figures we compute ourselves — growth rates, doubling times, rankings, the world total — are identified as ours in the text. They are reproducible from the free CSV, which carries every input column alongside the flags this site renders.

What we refuse to do

No number without its observation date. A money-supply figure with no date is unusable, so no page shows one.

No smoothing over a gap. An observation more than 24 months old carries a visible stale badge; a series with a redenomination carries a break mark and a shortened growth window; where the window is too short to annualise honestly, no rate is published at all. Silence is preferred to a plausible number.

No invention. Not a source, not an author, not a figure, not an image of data. Where we hold no data the page says so and explains why — the euro-area member pages exist for exactly that reason.

No gate. The full dataset downloads without registration, an email address or a paywall.

When a number is wrong

Errors get a dated public entry in the corrections log and the figure is fixed. We do not edit a wrong number away quietly.

Sources also revise their own history. When a source restates a value at an unchanged observation date, that revision is recorded in the changelog on the day the rebuild finds it, alongside every other change: new observations, series breaks, rank moves, series that went stale or came back.

How the data stays current

The dataset is rebuilt from the primary sources every night at 03:10 UTC. A rebuild that would reduce coverage — fewer economies, fewer recent observations or fewer USD conversions than the thresholds in the methodology — is refused, the previous dataset is kept, and the reason is recorded. Pipeline health is public at /status.

Authorship

Pages are published by the M2 Index Data Team rather than under an individual byline. The dataset, the derivation and the checks are the work product: where a figure is ours we say so, and where it is a source’s we name the source. To attribute this site, use “M2 Index, m2index.com” with the observation date of the figure you quote, under CC BY 4.0.
